Yes, and it looks like it doesn't matter how far right they go. As the New Yorker article pointed out, Republican incumbents in safe districts only have to win their primary in order to ensure reelection and to do that, they often outflank their Republican opponents by moving even further to the right. Until the dysfunctional electoral system is reformed, the Republicans need not worry about retaining control despite getting fewer than half the votes overall.
